Packaging Plus LLC is a vertically integrated global
packaging provider. Packaging Plus has implemented a
patented thermoformed fragility packaging system
utilizing recycled materials. The benefits include
optimizing global logistics yielding financial and
environmental cost reductions. This system replaces
bulky, costly to transport, non recyclable foamed
materials.
Light weight thermoformed U-Pads® serve as
transportation packaging to move millions of Hard Disk
drives from SE Asia to fulfillment centers in Europe and the US where they are repackaged for
retail sale in protective plastic GeoSpring® end caps. Both the thermoformed GeoSpring® end
caps and U-Pads® are made from 100% recycled HDPE. The use of recycled HDPE plastic is
saving millions of KWH energy and tons of greenhouse gas vs. virgin HDPE. Once empty, the
nest-able freight dense U-Pads are returned to Asia for reuse which saves millions more pounds
of material!
GPEC2009Packaging Plus GeoSpring® and U-Pads® fragility
packaging systems have a proven track record for
meeting the rigorous demands of the Hard Disk
Drive Storage industry and can be custom
configured for a variety of applications. They are
produced using an advanced thermoforming
process and are protected by six patents. The
design provides structures for a unitary spring
system including at least one flexible harmonic
bellow. When a product protected by this system
is dropped from a height, the rapid deceleration caused by the impact engages the spring system
and efficiently dissipates the shock and vibration. The system can be adapted to meet a wide range
of requirements without using large amounts of material.HDPE’s stiffness, impact toughness, and thermal resistance make it very suitable for this
application. Specific blends are formulated and closely controlled under the Xerostat® brand

addition of post-consumer recycled resin, quality is
vital. A narrow stream of closely inspected material is
specified and only highest grade RHDPE can deliver
the necessary performance. HDPE is one of the most
widely recycled plastics worldwide which makes it
possible for consumer’s to recycle the end caps after
use.
Costs pressures in the consumer electronics sector are
intense but there is also pressure on companies to
reduce their environmental footprint. This packaging
gpec2009technology
offers a next
generation approach in cost reduction while helping
companies achieve their sustainable development goals.
Only by developing a packaging system around recyclable
and reusable materials and considering cost reduction of the
entire system: freight, density, material weight and full-cycle
reclamation of materials, can both of these goals be achieved.
